Overview

“Champions for Change” is for Inner-City Youth (Ages 13-18)

Program Objective: The program is designed to expose inner-city youth ages 13-18 to various career fields, skilled trades, and entrepreneurial opportunities. By providing hands-on experiences, mentorship, and guidance, the program aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue meaningful career paths and create their own futures.

Our programming for teens is always a 4 week program and then 2 weeks off to re-group.

Breakdown

1. Career Exploration

  • Workshops & Panels: Industry professionals from fields such as technology, healthcare, business, public service, and the arts share their experiences and pathways.
  • Emphasis on educational requirements, job roles, and career trajectories.
  • Career Path Assessments: Assess participants’ interests, strengths, and values to help guide their career choices.
  • Q&A with Professionals: Teens engage with professionals in small groups to ask specific questions about their fields.

2. Skilled Trades Training

  • Hands-On Learning Sessions: Introduction to skilled trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, automotive repair, and construction.
  • Trade Certifications Overview: Explanation of the certification and apprenticeship processes for entering trades.
  • Project-Based Learning: Participants work on small trade-related projects to develop practical skills.
  • Guest Speakers from Trade Schools: Presentations on the opportunities and pathways within trade schools and technical programs.

3. Entrepreneurship Development

  • Business Basics Workshops: Topics include business planning, financial literacy, marketing, and product development.
  • Pitch Competition: Teens develop and pitch their business ideas to local entrepreneurs and business leaders.
  • Funding & Resources Guidance: Information on how to secure startup funding, grants, and mentorship for young entrepreneurs.
  • Youth-Led Business Projects: Small groups create mock businesses to understand the steps and challenges in running a business.

4. Mentorship & Networking

  • Mentorship Pairing: Each teen is matched with a mentor from their field of interest to provide guidance and career advice throughout the program.
  • Professional Networking Events: Teens participate in networking events with local business owners, entrepreneurs, and trade professionals.
  • Ongoing Support: Mentors remain accessible post-program to support teens’ future career or educational decisions.

5. Field Trips & Real-World Exposure

  • Site Visits to Local Businesses & Trade Schools: Teens visit companies, startups, and trade schools to see various career paths in action.
  • Internships & Job Shadowing Opportunities: Teens gain hands-on experience by interning or job shadowing in industries of interest.
  • College & Trade School Tours: Visits to local colleges, universities, and technical schools to explore higher education options.

The Youth Group meets every Tuesday night from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm for a time of worship, games, meal, and an interactive Bible lesson and small group discussion. We are working our way through the Bible using the Global youth leaders.

Duration and Format

Length: 6-12 weeks (Flexible based on scheduling and resources)

Format: Weekly workshops, field trips, and ongoing mentorship throughout the program
